If you're bored with your tame gym routine or much-practised power yoga, here is an import from the west that can really pump things up. Coming highly recommended from the well-toned and re-energized 50-year-old Neetu Kapoor, is TRX, an exercise form used to train US army cadets.
In-house work out
Not only is it extremely strenuous, you also require a proper guided approach to this suspension training exercise. On the plus side, you no longer need to drag your feet to the gym. Goodbye to treadmill, bench press and dumbbells. And there are no diet compulsions. This apparatus, a lightweight suspension trainer, can be easily installed in any corner of your house where you would find ample floor space to work out on.
Neetu Kapoor says, "TRX concentrates on body-balance, flexibility, agility and power. I needed to strengthen myself.
Besides, I realised that I was not losing the few extra kilos, which you tend to put on due to hormonal changes. Crunches, dips, nothing seemed to help. And then I read about TRX. Fortunately, I met the right trainer, Aditya Chaudhary, who is the master of this game."
Watch those abs
The exercise brings in a new concept in training. The key lies in suspension mode and the angle of training. It starts with you standing erect along the length of the pole. The success of the exercise depends on to what degree you can control your body in suspension thereby strengthening your whole body core and centre.
Divulging the benefits of TRX, Neetu says, "You stop hunching. You walk straighter, your gait changes, body language becomes more confident, metabolism improves. It also helps you looking lean and your back becomes stronger.
Since you are in suspension mode you stomach goes in automatically, which often does not happen when you are doing the normal exercises in the gym as you often tend to forget to pull your stomach in."
All in a slant
Since it throws every muscle of the body into action it is extremely strenuous and should be practiced in short sets of 30 seconds each, shifting weight from one leg to another. An average duration of an hour suffices. The ultimate goal being, the more you can slant on the TRX, the fitter you are. "Keeping my body weight into account, Aditya exactly knew how slowly or fast he should go with me. I started in almost standing position but now my bends have improved drastically. Currently I'm at about five days a week with an hour and a half at each session. It's exhausting but it feels great," says Neetu.
